Floor bed with slats

Do Montessori Floor Beds Need Slats?

Montessori floor beds don’t always require slats, but using them is generally a good idea. Because a floor bed sits very close to the ground, placing a mattress directly on the floor can limit airflow underneath it. Over time, trapped moisture may contribute to mold, mildew, or unwanted odors.

Bed slats create a small amount of space beneath the mattress, allowing air to circulate while still keeping the sleeping surface low to the ground. This maintains the accessible design associated with Montessori-style bedrooms while providing better ventilation and support for the mattress.

A properly designed Montessori floor bed may use low-profile wooden slats, a ventilated platform, or another supportive base. Whichever option you choose, make sure the mattress is adequately supported and follow the mattress manufacturer's foundation and ventilation recommendations.

In short, Montessori floor beds don't necessarily need slats, but slats can improve airflow, mattress support, and overall practicality without taking away from the low-to-the-floor design.
